About the Exhibition:
On 28 June 2025, artists around the world responded to an international art action: “Everything is Fine in Hong Kong”.
On that day, in front of Sheffield's Town Hall, three artist units (six artists in total) presented their performance art works. Through these actions, they revealed to the public how deeply ironic and passive the notion of “no problems” in Hong Kong has become, exposing how the Chinese Communist Party and the Hong Kong authorities deploy the National Security Law to suppress everyday life, artistic practice, and freedom of expression.
Artist Q Sheung Yan obediently followed instructions to consume “dog food,” enacting an exaggerated compliance. Artist Joyce was forced to manufacture smiles — each grin wider, more unnatural than the last. Artist collective Project 226, punished for disobedience, carried out self-inflicted discipline by repeatedly copying 1,000 strokes with pens in seven different colours.
This exhibition also responds to the BESEA Heritage Month in the UK this September. The theme for 2025 is “Reframing Resilience,” which resonates closely with the objective of the performance art action in this exhibition: to highlight the powerful sense of identity and belonging among Hongkongers in the UK.
The exhibition will present video documentation of the three performances, alongside key materials used in the works. It will be on view at C & G Artpartment from 19 September, 2025 to 18 October, 2025. We warmly invite you to visit.
