城市逐格回香港 單格動畫展覽 | Chasing The Citys' Frames Back to HK Stop Motion Animation Exhibition

The famous Cantonese saying: “Having the time to die, but no time to be sick,” well describes the living and working condition of many Hong Kong people. It is pathetic, indeed.

Besides initiating the International Sick Leave Day in 2008 to invite everyone to take a ‘sick leave’ on May 13th every year, C&G also are interested in working with stop-motion animation and unplugged “media art” in order to slowly digest the sense of helplessness among the fast-paced city life. Ever since 2009, C&G have developed a series of stop-motion animations and related projects, in collaboration with artists and art spaces from Hong Kong, Puck and Sopot in Poland, Mumbai in India and Chongqing in China.

Instead of videos (the final product), the hand-drawn images and photo stills from the tedious art-making process have always been the highlight in the exhibitions of these projects. Stop-motion animations use thousands of small freeze-frames, with minor variation in each frame, to quickly capture the almost invisible substances and the almost unimaginable spaces of different cities the artists visit and live in.

“Chasing the Cities' Frames," an Art and Cultural Exchange programme in the Southern U.S, has taken the freeze-frames by Clara CHEUNG, Gum CHENG, Jess LAU and LAM Kin Choi, from their stop-motion animation works about their hometown to the Southern US in Jan and Feb of 2019 Their artworks well reflect their close examination of the society, and their unique analysis of the city's speed, people’s rhythm, as well as the complex relationship and rapid changes within the social network. They have been invited by the art departments of Rice University and Rhodes College, in Texas and Tennessee respectively, to visit, exhibit, lecture, have cultural exchanges with the art students in both schools, and to share with audience in Southern US about the stories and anxiety of the ‘super-efficient’ Hongkongers.

The stop-motion animations in “Chasing the Cities' Frames” quickly show the slowly depicted story frames from Hong Kong, and use this huge contrast between the freeze moments and speedy review to lead the audience to look into the micro-portions of the city. Besides bringing their works from Hong Kong to Texas and Tennessee, the four artists will also take some of these frames to another journey for a new narrative.

The current exhibition will bring back their animation works to share with Hong Konhg in C&G Artpartment.
