Curatorial Statment: Half a year after the arrival of the financial tsunami, the financial industry, being the heart of Hong Kong's economy, still is in a very weak condition: Hang Seng index drops to around 15,000 points recently, and many are injured or die in the stock market.

In the description of a Cantonese slang, many Hongkongers have got only "half-life" left throughout this tsunami. The art market has also "tasted both the sugar and the shit" during this period. Despite the stable financial status, government is lack of good solutions for the tsunami, and cannot really release the psychological pressure and other problems brought by the tsunami.

On the other hand, the "swine flu" and recent medical blunders also scare most Hongkongers (who have got only "half-life") to death: including the lost of the dead bodies, not offering any help to a dying one, offering wrong and expired medicines to patients etc. Art, as an element for spiritual elevation, should be able to help everyone recover from this local heart disease under globalization.

The current exhibition invites artists to generate their own techniques of "Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation" in order to stimulate the weak pulse rates of the grassroots, middleclass, government and the deprived etc, with the help of the power of art. The ideal is to save everyone in need. One of the participating artists, Wen Yau, has joined the Red Cross. "CPR" to her is just an easy job, although she has failed the first aid exam. This time, she can only hire someone to do "CPR" for her. After all, she is not a first aider, but just an artist. Lock Lo will have an interactive art piece: bringing in the most commonly seen item on Hong Kong street nowadays: "a roll-up banner stand" into the exhibition, and he will try to re-interpret the value of this be-loved promotional tool. Law Man Lok is going to offer CPR directly for the Hong Kong legislative councilor who is the most problematic and helpless, according to Law. Clara Cheung designs a new game based on "Monopoly," and tries to turn over the rules in this game in order to allow citizens to save their public spaces and valuable memories of the city. Gum's self-portrait in his consistent style calls for everyone, especially the "fashionable" ones, to relax through painting and art. After all, prevention is better than cure.

This exhibit will have an opening party on the Mother's Day, May 10th. You are welcome to bring your mother along to join and let her relax in the art despite the recent stressful social atmosphere. The book launch of "C&G Artpartment 2007-2008" will also be conducted at the exhibition opening. This new publication is about the living condition of C&G Artpartment in 2007-2008, consisting of interviews with participating artists, articles by an art critic and other audience. This is printed in both Chinese and English, with images from the past exhibitions of C&G.

We also strongly recommend everyone to join the annual "International Sick Leave Day" on May 13th (Wed), by taking a sick leave and painting outdoor at West Kowloon with us. This way, you can relax your body and free your body from many illnesses.
