About the Exhibition:

For Hong Kong artists, bamboo has long occupied a significant place in their practice, appearing across painting, carving, sculpture, construction, and installation. From two-dimensional representation to relief, three-dimensional form, new media, and performance, bamboo has consistently remained present within Hong Kong contemporary art, never marginalised nor diminished in value.

The symbolism of bamboo is almost self-evident, as it universally embodies ideals of integrity and righteousness. That is why many artists incorporate its meanings into their works. Of course, this does not mean that the more bamboo an artist depicts, the more noble, upright, or incorruptible the artist must be. The two are not necessarily related.

Bamboo has never been overlooked because it is an inseparable part of Hong Kong people’s daily lives and culture. If one day Hong Kong were ever to ban the usage of bamboo, it would surely be because bamboo was on the verge of extinction—not because it could be casually replaced. This exhibition is a response to the fire in Tai Po, Hong Kong, at the end of 2025, in which some people blamed bamboo as the culprit. In the past two months, numerous articles and short videos defending the value and necessity of bamboo scaffolding have circulated on social media. They clearly reveal Hongkongers’ genuine love and care for bamboo scaffolding—something that cannot be faked. This exhibition presents three video works, created at three different periods—approximately twenty years ago, ten years ago, and this year. Rather than directly showcasing bamboo’s symbolic virtues, the artworks focus on bamboo’s practicality and its applications, showing how deeply bamboo has penetrated Hong Kong people’s lives and become an integral part of our cultural fabric.

When viewing the exhibition, imagine if the “bamboo” elements in the artworks were replaced with another material, such as metal frames — the whole piece would feel completely wrong. We hope everyone can develop more imagination, greater respect, more openness, and wider use of bamboo. This exhibition also celebrates ‘Hong Kong Day and Fest,’ using the art of bamboo to encourage Hong Kongers to carry forward our unique culture and heritage.

On the opening day, there will also be a “Mini Flower Plaque Workshop.” The exhibition runs from January 24 to February 21, 2026. While the workshop has limited seats, and therefore requires registration and material fee, the exhibition is free for all.

「竹的藝術」展覽

竹，一直以嚟都係藝術家創作元素之一。由畫「竹」、雕「竹」、塑「竹」、砌「竹」……由平面、半立體、立體、新媒體到行為，「竹」都無被藝術界忽視/輕視過。

「竹」嘅寓意，唔洗多講都知係好嘢，所以好多藝術家都將「竹」嘅寓意放入作品之中。當然，唔係表示越畫得「竹」多，就表示個藝術家越風高亮節、正直不阿，兩者可以係無關係。

「竹」未被忽視，因為佢就係我哋香港人生活一部分、係文化一部分，切割唔到。如果有朝一日香港有需要禁「竹」，相信只會係因為「竹」瀕臨絕種，而唔係佢可以被任意取代。今次展覽係對舊年年尾香港大埔火災，有人歸咎於「竹」係禍首呢件事而作出回應。近兩月，已有大量為搭「竹棚」嘅存在價值而進行平反的文章、短片喺社交媒體流傳，確實睇得出香港人對「竹棚」嘅真心愛護，無得假。

今次展覽以錄像為主要媒介，展出三件錄像作品，三件作品分別喺三個唔同時期，大約廿年前、十年前同今年創作，唔係直接展示「竹」有幾風高亮節、中空謙遜，而係展示「竹」本身嘅實用性，同「竹」嘅運用，點樣入晒香港人嘅血，成為我哋生活文化嘅一部分。

欣賞展覽嘅時候，想像作品當中嘅「竹」元素被改成另一種物料，例如：金屬架，成件作品好似錯晒。期望大家可以對「竹」有更多想像、更多尊重、更多包容、更多運用。今次展覽亦響應「香港節暨香港開埠185周年」，以竹的藝術，鼓勵香港人承傳自己嘅文化。開幕當日仲有藝術家歐陽東帶領嘅「迷你花牌製作工作坊」。

展覽由2026年1月24日開始，至2月21日結束。展覽費用全免，歡迎各位參觀，
